Renata Ford, the widow of former Toronto mayor Rob Ford, has died at the age of 55, leaving family members and loved ones in mourning.
The news of her passing was confirmed by her brother-in-law, Doug Ford, who released a heartfelt statement expressing the family’s grief and asking for privacy during this difficult time.
“My heart breaks for Stephanie and Dougie. They’ve been through so much at such young ages, and losing their mom is incredibly painful. Our whole family is hurting for them. We ask that people respect their privacy during this very difficult time.”
Renata Ford is survived by her two children, Stephanie and Douglas (“Dougie”), whom she shared with Rob Ford, who died in 2016 following a battle with cancer. Her cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
Although she largely remained out of the public spotlight during her husband’s time as mayor, Renata briefly entered politics herself. In the 2019 Canadian federal election, she ran as the People’s Party of Canada candidate for Etobicoke North, ultimately finishing fourth.
Her candidacy came shortly after she filed a $15 million lawsuit against her brothers-in-law, including Doug Ford, alleging the mismanagement of family assets and Rob Ford’s estate. The allegations were denied by the premier.
Following the announcement of her passing, tributes and condolences began to emerge from across Ontario. The Ontario Liberal Party issued a statement extending sympathies to Doug Ford and the entire Ford family, wishing them strength and comfort as they grieve.
Former Rob Ford chief of staff Mark Towhey also shared his sadness, remembering Renata as a private individual who largely stayed away from political life despite her husband’s high-profile career.
He reflected on her devotion to her family, saying his thoughts were immediately with her children, whom he remembered from their younger years, adding that Renata “will certainly be missed by her children.”
Throughout Rob Ford’s tumultuous years as Toronto mayor, Renata maintained a quiet and private life, rarely seeking public attention despite the intense media scrutiny surrounding her husband. Friends and colleagues often described her as someone who preferred to remain out of politics and focus on her family.
