Her loved ones are once again reflecting on her life following the sentencing of Thomas Stein, who was ordered to spend the rest of his life in prison for her murder.
On July 10, Thomas Stein, now 18, was sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of first-degree murder in connection with Kayla’s death. A jury found him guilty in May following a week-long trial. In addition to the life sentence, the court imposed three consecutive 15-year prison terms for attempted robbery with a firearm, bringing an additional 45 years to his sentence.
The fatal incident occurred as Kayla and two friends were walking from a movie theater to a nearby McDonald’s in Cape Coral. According to prosecutors, Stein and Christopher Horne Jr. were driving a rented SUV while searching for victims to rob. Investigators said the pair approached the teenagers, and during the attempted robbery, Kayla was shot at close range.
Despite efforts by her friends and emergency responders to save her, Kayla succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital.
During sentencing, Stein acknowledged making what he described as a “terrible decision” by driving the vehicle that night but maintained he did not fire the fatal shot. Before receiving his sentence, he asked Circuit Judge Nick Thompson for permission to hug his family one final time before being taken into custody. The judge denied the request, stating that while Stein could verbally say goodbye, physical contact would not be permitted in the courtroom.
Christopher Horne Jr., who entered into a plea agreement and testified against Stein during the trial, previously received a 25-year prison sentence.
