The Colombian Football Federation has strongly condemned death threats made against national team forward Jaminton Campaz and his family following Colombia’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup, while invoking the tragic memory of Andrés Escobar, whose murder remains one of football’s darkest moments.
According to reports, Campaz has received threats after Colombia’s last-16 exit to Switzerland, a match in which he missed a potential winning opportunity during extra time before Colombia was eliminated in a penalty shootout. The threats have reportedly led the 25-year-old striker to remain outside Colombia temporarily due to security concerns.
In a statement released Friday, the Colombian Football Federation denounced the intimidation directed at Campaz and his family.
“No athlete and no member of his closest circle should be exposed to intimidation just because he represents his country in sport.”
The federation also urged Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office to intensify its investigation and identify those responsible for the threats.
Andrés Escobar’s Death Still Casts a Long Shadow
The latest incident has revived painful memories of Andrés Escobar, the Colombian defender whose death shocked the football world in 1994.
During the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Escobar accidentally scored an own goal in Colombia’s 2-1 loss to the host nation. The defeat contributed to Colombia’s elimination from the tournament.
Just days after the team returned home, Escobar was shot and killed outside a nightclub in Medellín on July 2, 1994, at the age of 27. His murder was widely believed to be linked to the intense backlash following the World Cup, although broader issues involving organized crime and gambling also surrounded the case.
The killing drew international condemnation and remains one of the most tragic events in football history.
Campaz Appeals for Respect
Following the recent threats, Campaz addressed supporters through social media, urging fans not to allow disappointment to turn into violence.
“Football also includes difficult moments. My Colombia, please let us never lose sight of respect.
We may have different opinions or feel frustration and sadness, but no passion justifies hatred or a life in fear.”
His message has been widely shared by fellow players, fans, and football organizations calling for respect and an end to abuse directed at athletes.
