CAPE TOWN — South African football is in mourning following the tragic and sudden passing of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25. The news was officially confirmed on Saturday by the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU), Mamelodi Sundowns, and the Ministry of Sport, Arts & Culture.
Adams’ untimely death comes just weeks after he played a pivotal role in South Africa’s historic run at the FIFA World Cup, where the national team advanced to the knockout rounds for the first time in history.
Police Investigation Underway
An official cause of death has not yet been confirmed. Authorities in the Western Cape have opened an inquest to determine the circumstances surrounding his passing.
“Cape Town Central police registered an Inquest for investigation following the discovery of the body of a 25-year-old male on Saturday, 2026-07-11 at 11:06 at a premises in Military Road, Schotschekloof,” Western Cape South African Police Service spokesperson F.C. van Wyk confirmed.

Rising Star’s Legacy
Adams’ club career was marked by immense success. Having risen through the youth academy ranks at Stellenbosch FC, he transferred to powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.
In May, Adams helped lead Sundowns to a historic CAF Champions League title. In an emotional gesture following the victory, he dedicated his winner’s medal to his former Stellenbosch teammate Oshwin Andries, who tragically passed away in 2023. The Stellenbosch football community has suffered repeated heartbreaks, having also mourned the loss of another young academy graduate, Jeandre Gaffoor, early in 2026.
