BIDDEFORD, Maine — A person was killed during a shooting involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Biddeford on Monday morning, prompting an active investigation by state and federal authorities.
The incident was confirmed by Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau, who said the fatal shooting occurred in Biddeford. While few details have been released, authorities have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the deadly encounter.
In a statement shared on social media, Fecteau said:
“Fellow Biddeford residents and Mainers, this morning a shooting occurred in Biddeford. A person was killed. ICE was involved. State Police and the Department of Public Safety are now on scene to gather details and would expect the FBI to investigate as well.”
He added that those were the only confirmed details available at the time and pledged to provide additional updates as more information becomes available.
According to Fecteau, members of the Maine State Police and the Maine Department of Public Safety responded to the scene shortly after the shooting. Because the incident involved a federal law enforcement agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is also expected to assist with or oversee aspects of the investigation.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the person who was killed, nor have they disclosed the events that led to the shooting. It remains unclear whether the deceased was the subject of an immigration enforcement operation or how the confrontation unfolded.
